The small, sloped yard area for this house in Solana Beach was dominated by huge and much-loved Torrey pine trees. We extended a new stone terrace out into the landscape with long, floating steps that disappeared into a prairie of grasses. The heft and verticality of the tree trunks contrasted with the soft, horizontal field of grasses.
